Due to the ongoing pandemic, the EU’s digital Corona certificates will remain valid. On Monday, representatives of the European Parliament and EU governments agreed to extend the regulation by one year until June 30, 2023.
The certificates are intended to make traveling in Corona times as uncomplicated as possible. A QR code can be used to prove whether one has either been vaccinated against Covid-19, tested negative for Corona, or recovered from Corona. The digital version can be stored on a mobile device, and there is also usually the option to create a paper version.
Extension of validity of EU’s Corona certificates proposed in February
The EU Commission had already proposed extending the EU rules for the certificates in February. It reasoned that coronavirus remains widespread in Europe, and the impact of a possible increase in infections in the second half of 2022 or the emergence of new variants is hard to predict. The extension of the regulation would allow travelers to continue using their EU Covid digital certificate if member states maintained specific public health measures.
